How did you get into the industry?

Although I studied journalism, I’ve always loved design. I taught myself the basics of Adobe programmes and would learn as much as I could on the job from in-house designers. I then took a year-long Shillington course to upgrade my skills and graduated in 2014.

I was planning to make a full leap into the industry but found out I was pregnant! So this led me to freelance, which actually enabled me to take on projects that I really wanted to do, and hone my craft in my own time.

Where are you based now and who do you work for?

*

I’m based in east London and still work for myself.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

I would be working in a space where I could help people heal or support people who are vulnerable, like refugees or victims of domestic abuse. I’m already starting to do that a little – I’ve recently learned how to play Tibetan bowls and other instruments and have begun offering sound baths.

Can you explain your creative process? What makes it unique?

*

I’m huge on doing a deep dive with my clients – I like to know as much as I possibly can about them, their business, why they do what do, their unique magic and who their audience is before starting any creative.

I like to walk away from the computer and even just walk around my neighbourhood to get inspiration, download ideas and then sketch them out.

How would you describe your style?

Intriguing, expansive, outside of the box

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

I’m really inspired by fellow female designers, of whom I have learned a lot! Their journeys inspire me to keep going and make it feel possible that I can achieve my ideal work/life balance.

What kind of tools/kit/software could you not do without?

*

I use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign in equal measure and XD a bit more lately. I also love wordmark.it, where you can see all of the fonts you have on your computer, ColourZilla, the colour picker tool and the font finder, What font.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

Ooh that’s a big question! I struggle from time to time too, but if I feel uninspired, I know I need to take a break from my computer and make time for self-care or getting out with friends. Once I refresh for a few days, there’s always something that catches my eye again and I’m pulled back into the design world, because I just love it so much!

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

Probably just getting this far as a freelancer! Continuing to push myself, constantly learning new things, updating my skills and putting myself out there – it’s real graft!

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?

*

I think there should be more mentorship. I know there are some schemes and I have had great experiences as a mentee, but mentorships where you actually work alongside agencies that could potentially hire you at the end would be great.

There seems to be a big divide between graduating and then getting into the industry, as you’re up against so many multi-faceted creatives in London.
